Spread the Upcycling Method
By Juliana Garcia Bello | October 1, 2022

Research and production project rooted in the circular economy and knowledge sharing. The project focuses on creating a series of reproducible garments using upcycling patterns to reconstruct and repurpose unused clothing.

The knowledge from GARCIA BELLO will be shared with Villamax (Valencia, Spain), a brand led by Gonzalo Villa that embraces slow fashion and handmade garments with local production. This collaboration, built on shared values, aims to offer an alternative to the traditional fashion industry by spreading and advancing the upcycling system. GB/VX is one of the 30 finalist projects supported by CirCoAX30 - CircularInnoBooster Fashion and Textile under the #COSME_EU program, which seeks to transform the textile and fashion industry towards a circular economy model.

Walk-in Wardrobe, The Netherlands
By Juliana Garcia Bello | June 14, 2022

Transforming the fashion industry requires a profound and large-scale system change. The deep-rooted exploitation of people and the planet makes this a daunting task. However, if we start viewing our wardrobes as an entry point to this complex system, we can begin to make a difference.

In collaboration with Cedric Mizero, Soup Archive, GARCIA BELLO, Outfit Library Less, and 2Switch, Walk-in Wardrobes encourages both individual and collective acts of repair and reparation— from mending our clothes to addressing the flaws in our systems. Swapping, sharing, borrowing, and lending become forms of dissent against overconsumption. Mending, upcycling, repurposing, and reusing are acts of resistance against a system built on obsolescence and waste. Keeping clothes in circulation is a radical and joyful act.

Walk-in Wardrobes was part of State of Fashion Biennale 2022 at Rozet, Arnhem, The Netherlands.

Waardevool, The Netherlands
By Juliana Garcia Bello | June 14, 2022

This Garment is Connected to My Story is an exhibition that invites you to reflect on the value of clothing— to connect with what we wear and promote a conscious use of garments. We affirm that clothing is not disposable. The only truly sustainable garment is the one that already exists in your wardrobe and carries a story— the one with which you’ve built a connection. We invited people to write down the stories that make their garments special. We collected and shared these stories because our clothes hold meaning and importance.

Waardevool was presented on June 3rd as part of the Fashion + Design Festival Arnhem at Museum Arnhem, Utrechtseweg 87, Arnhem, The Netherlands.

Woman, Argentina
By Juliana Garcia Bello | March 8, 2022

MUJER, a fragment from Amparo Ochoa

"Woman, if your ideas have grown,
They will say very ugly things about you.
That you are not good, that you should behave,
That when you are silent, you look much more beautiful.
Woman, a blooming ear among diapers,
A chain of ancestral links.
Strong ovary, speak up and declare your worth—
Life begins where everyone is equal.
Angela Jean, or formerly Manuela,
Tomorrow is too late, and time is pressing."

MAIUM x GARCIA BELLO
By Juliana Garcia Bello | October 10, 2021

Collection of upcycled rainwear produced from recycled plastic. All garments are crafted from post-consumer Maium raincoats, redesigned and assembled in the Netherlands by GARCIA BELLO.

The recycling processes involve one or both of the following cycles: Upcycling, known as creative reuse, transforms by-products, waste products, and unwanted materials into new products perceived to have greater value. In contrast, traditional product life cycle processes often treat post-consumer products or materials as mere waste, overlooking their potential real value.
